CHELYABINSK METEORITE

On 15 February 2013, a meteoroid entered Earth's atmosphere over the Chelyabinsk region of Russia, producing one of the most remarkable meteor events witnessed in modern times. The object exploded high above the ground, creating an exceptionally bright flash and a powerful shock wave that was observed across a large area.

Fragments recovered after the event were identified as pieces of an ordinary chondrite, a primitive type of stony meteorite containing chondrules and minerals that formed during the early history of the Solar System. The Chelyabinsk meteorite provides scientists with an opportunity to study material that spent billions of years traveling through space before encountering Earth.

The Chelyabinsk meteorite is particularly important because the 2013 event was extensively recorded by cameras, satellites, eyewitnesses, and scientific instruments. This wealth of observations allowed researchers to reconstruct aspects of the meteoroid's atmospheric entry, fragmentation, and explosive breakup.

Recovered meteorite fragments range from tiny pieces to much larger specimens, including material recovered from the vicinity of Chebarkul Lake. Their study has helped scientists understand the physical properties and behavior of near-Earth objects as they pass through Earth's atmosphere.

Today, a Chelyabinsk meteorite specimen represents more than a piece of extraterrestrial rock. It is a tangible remnant of a well-documented cosmic event preserving material from an asteroid that journeyed through space before arriving on Earth on a February morning in 2013.
